Moon Cake Box
Fall 2020| Box Cover Illustration
Hang Nga means "moon lady" in Vietnamese. This festival is very important holiday and childhood memory for children in Vietnam and Asia. The mooncakes are a notorious delight of the holiday. Families gather around watching the moon and eating the moon cakes, while children also light lanterns and paly with their friends. In this packaging, I want to reflect the fun spirit and childlike fun of the moon festival.
Synopsis
Sketches and Ideation:
I want to design the look and feel of the iconic Moon Lady figure for the Autumn Festival. Since this holiday is popular among children and known for its warm family gatherings, I want the character to appear warm and youthful, tailored toward a younger audience. I sketched various poses and eye designs to narrow down the look. I also sketched clouds and lanterns inspired by traditional Chinese art. After experimenting with different layouts, I decided on a circular design to create a clear focal point in the center.
Graphic Elements:
I gave the Moon Lady illustration a friendly and youthful appearance to bring a warm and welcoming feel to the Autumn Festival. I created vector illustrations of the bunny, as bunnies are associated with the moon. I wanted to include illustrations of the sky and lanterns to capture the vibrant, nighttime atmosphere of the mooncake box. I also incorporated a motif from Chinese patterns to add a traditional aesthetic.
Palette:
I chose the font Old Standard TT for its traditional serifs and organic swish. I liked how this font reflected the traditional and elegant feel of the festival. The font family also included accents for Vietnamese text. I selected blue and orange as my color palette. I chose blue to represent the night sky on the front cover, and orange as my secondary color to create contrast. I thought these colors conveyed a festive atmosphere.
The Box Design
I differentiated the colors inside the boxes. The orange boxes contain two egg yolks, while the blue boxes contain one. The items are positioned in a way that corresponds to the direction around the box.
