Cute Flan Recipe Booklet
Spring 2019| Book Illustration
To test my illustration skills, I created a recipe book tailored for children and anyone who enjoys adorable and fun characters. I decided to base the theme on making flan caramel, my favorite dessert. I wanted this book to be a way for parents and children to bond while making a dish they both enjoy, and it could also be given as a gift to a friend.
Synopsis
First Sketch:
I explored different angles in my sketches. I want to sketch the basic icons to determine the composition I want to adhere to when applying the style. My goal is for each graphic to be organic, fun, and kid-friendly.
Second Sketch:
I sketched out different kawaii characters and gave them various happy facial expressions. I wanted all the corners to be round and organic to create a cute and friendly look. I also included ingredients, kitchen appliances, and tools.
Book Title Type:
I chose the font Nunito for its friendly, organic feel. I then recolored the font to give it a cartoony flan look. I also illustrated caramel and added shading to make the type pop on the cover of the book. For the main body text, I chose the font Dekko, while Damion was used for the secondary title text. I aimed to make it look as though the caramel was written across the book.
Book Character Icons
I made the kitchen characters to be very friendly and uplifting. I used organic and rounded lines to convey the idea for children. I applied different faces to each character to bring a fun feel to it.
